"Tally" by Sage Group was first introduced in 1991. It was designed to be a complete financial application that would enable small companies with limited accounting expertise to manage the total financial picture on their own without relying on expensive outside services. Tally was first produced for DOS and then released for Windows in 1994. Sage ran an extensive program of user testing to ensure the ease of use the software offered was sufficient for Tally to succeed. They asked users to consider what tasks they would like Tally software to do for them, and how it should be presented. As a result, prior to its introduction, Tally underwent rigorous usability testing. Tally uses simple English-like interface instead of accounting jargon that is found in other accounting software programs. The first release of Tally supported multi-currency transactions. Later releases included advanced features like management reports, business intelligence and technical analysis tools. Tally was acquired by SAS in May 2002. As the result of the acquisition, the Tally brand was retired and version 7 (2003) was given a new name - SAS Tally. Versions 8 (2004) and 9 (2005) were also renamed to SAS Tally. New versions released after that are still named as "Tally", although they are based on SAS products. Sage Software, now known as Sage Ltd., continues to develop the software under its own brand. Sage has released multiple versions since it acquired Tally, but all have retained the Sage branding, not to be confused with the discontinued Tally brand formerly used by Sage Software. A version for the Windows RT operating system was released in 2013.
Version 6 is being replaced by version 7, but is still available for sale.
